The Ohanamalu TKD logo is a combination of two powerful philosophies.
The Native American medicine wheel speaks of the many phases and facets of life on planet earth.
In the East, the sun rises. It is the dawning of a new day and the dawn of our lives. We rise like the sun and are able to see all things in a bright, new light. Much like a hawk, the patron of the East, we have the ability to see the world from a distance with fresh, searching eyes.
In the Northern Hemisphere, the sun takes a Southernly path across the sky. As the day goes on and the sun visits the South, animals like the mouse take refuge from the sun in their burrows. In the noon hour of our lives, we do the same. We become intimate and involved with our lives; work takes place in the heat of the day, but often underground and unnoticed by the rest of the world.
As day closes, and the sun begins to set in the West, we become quiet and introspective yet incredibly strong with the knowledge gained throughout our life’s time. Like the bear, we move slow but with immense power. We do not seek attention but instead allow our might to manifest itself in our strength and wisdom.
All the while, through all of life’s changes and transitions, there lie the great, white mountains of the North. Stable, eternal, and seemingly unchanging, they are a witness to the thousands of days and thousands of lives that pass in the thousands of years of life on Earth. They stand guard and remind us that we are a very small part of something very, very big, and that we should at once be both humble and proud to be part of that greatness.
In the center of our logo is the Japanese Enso, the symbol of Zen. Life is a cycle of cycles. Life is complete, whole, and simple. More importantly, there is the great freedom of Nothing in the center of it all. There are no standards to live by but our own; no forgiveness to seek, no enlightenment to attain, and no pressure to strive for some arbitrary measure of success.
